It appears we took nearly a year long sabbatical from blogging. It wasn't
planned, it just happened. Life got crazy and the truth is, I
did not have the emotional energy to blog.
The thought
of returning and having to explain where I have been personally and
where we have been as a family has been incredibly intimidating to me. I
guess it became one of those things that I put off and put off until it
felt unapproachable. So here I am and trying again. Please hang tight,
its a long post. Also, please note that I switch often on between "I"
and "We"-- this is intentional. Our family is in this post, though
written primarily from my perspective. This piece was a sort of joint
effort.
As
Ben and I approach our our 5th year as a couple, living together as a
family for 4 years, and today celebrating our 2nd marriage anniversary,
I've been reflecting a lot on our
family. We've grown together a great deal and I'm proud of the place
we've come to. We've experienced grief, loss, pain, joy, peace,
happiness, and so much more. Still we both know that we have a long road
to travel. We're not ashamed of our struggles but proud of our
triumphs.
I have tried my best to capture where our family has been the
last year (maybe not moment-by-moment) and where we are headed. We hope
this post will help reconnect us with all of you.
The
most difficult to discuss issue for me is the one that drew me away
from the
blog in the first place. Early last August, we were surprised with a
very unexpected, positive pregnancy test. Ben and I shared our blissful
secret and could not help but revel in the excitement. This was a very
much wanted addition to the family. Already we imagined buying a crib,
clothes, and all the fun things that come with a baby.
Still as
quickly as the joy arrived, fear came sweeping in. The next few weeks
became a blur, one that even now is difficult to separate the timing of
certain details. We still don't have the 'why' and maybe never will. I
remember driving to a doctor, crying
my eyes out and praying for the baby to hold on despite the pain I was
feeling in my womb and heart. I knew something was terribly wrong, and
there was nothing I could do. I can't remember if there were two or
three trips to the emergency room, but I do remember the doctor telling
Ben, "I think its time you start preparing your wife for the loss..."
But I wasn't ready.
August 28th, 2011 Hurricane Irene
hit the East Coast... I wasn't afraid of the storm, the wind, or the
rain. I was only afraid of the pain I felt physically and emotionally.
Ben was at my side the entire time and Z played in his room, mostly
unaware of anything but the fact I wasn't feeling well.
We
lost the baby that day. The next week I was sent for an Ultrasound to
confirm miscarriage. The test was positive, the pain was definitive- but
there was more bad news.
Despite the odds being highly
improbable, I had been carrying a dual pregnancy. One baby miscarried,
and the other had implanted in my left fallopian tube. This was the
first time I understood what an ectopic pregnancy was, moreover, what it
meant. The tube was
ruptured, the fetus was no longer living, and the doctors called for
emergency surgery. My left tube had to be removed, cutting future
chances of pregnancy in half.
There is nothing like the pain I
felt then. That pain still is with our family now, though it isn't as
intense, it is always there. It shook our world and life. We had to
determine how to explain all of this to Z, and then watch him grieve.
That was not an easy decision but one we felt was important at his age.
Then for a
long while, I felt like a shell of a person. Seeing mothers made me cry,
parenting Z made me ache, and even when I slept, I dreamt of the little
ones we lost.
Life didn't stop for us-
not even for a moment. With an 8 year old, we had to keep going, keep
parenting, keep loving, and yet learn to be ok being broken at the same time.
And
the experience, as horrific as it was, drew Ben and I closer together.
The loss of our babies that we wanted so badly gave us a deeper
understanding of the blessings we have today. While I don't agree that
death and pain is necessary to 'learn a lesson' or that 'it happened for
a reason', I do believe its possible to find a lesson in every
circumstance.
Its been nearly a year and I can hardly
believe I am writing about all of this... in public. It feels good,
though. And we kept going, although we never moved on. April 15th, (the
expected due date) was a terrible day, Mother's Day (consequently the
exact would-be-1 month birthday) was very difficult. Still everyday gets
further away from the initial wound. And we keep going...
Z
has become this amazing, funny, and strong-willed nine year old. Since
last posting, he has grown to be quite the helpful and compassionate
young man. Everyday, I love watching him grow. Its a humbling
experience, raising a young man, but so incredibly rewarding. I cannot
imagine being more proud of him. Granted, he's not perfect either. He
can be frustrating, clingy, snotty, and crude- everything you would
expect from a nine year old boy. Still, he's responsive and has a clear
understanding of right and wrong and is quick to make amends.
Our family is both beautiful and complicated. Being a Stepfamily is
nothing like being in a 'nuclear' family. I'm not sure how to stress
that enough. Not only do Ben and I have very different backgrounds and
parenting styles; but the boys (Ben and Z) came with ready made
traditions, habits, and routines. Some of them I agree with and some,
not so much. We've had to work really hard to compromise and make
decisions regarding how we see our family... some of it looks nothing like their original family
and somethings haven't changed that much. It hasn't been perfect but
its real and there's a whole lot of love between the three of us.
We've
had to make traditions of our own and recognize that things a nuclear
family enjoys day-to-day is not our reality. It has been difficult to
spend some holidays as a segmented family... some years, not having Z on
Christmas day has been a heart breaking experience in our home. We now
celebrate as a family on Christmas Eve. I had never celebrated on
Christmas Eve, but we have come to love the intimate celebration and
time together.
Another very noteworthy event that occurred in the last year was
Ben's beginning and completion of the Masters of Arts and Teaching
Program at Notre Dame of Maryland University. In ten months and with
countless hours of studying, planning, researching, testing, and more
planning; he completed both the necessary course work and internships to
earn his Master's degree in Elementary Education and Special Education.
As his wife and friend, I am extremely proud of his accomplishment as
well as our family's ability to adjust and adapt to the changes
necessary to support Ben's efforts.
Now as Ben is embarking
on one major change, applying for jobs and interviews in this new
career, our family is preparing for another massive change.
With
a great deal of excitement, anticipation, planning, and fear; we're
extremely happy to be expecting a little girl in early
November of this year. I'm currently 26 weeks pregnant, with only 14
weeks left to go. By the end of this work week, we will officially be in
our 3rd trimester. Expecting Chloe has been a trial in itself, learning
to trust in God and His plans for our family. Ben has been and
continues to be the most amazing support and husband that any woman
could ask for. I feel so incredibly blessed.
It's an exciting time for our
family. We hope now that with a thorough update, that the
following posts will be much lighter (both in quantity and content) and more frequent.
Until then!

Spring is Nearly Here
"Hope that is seen in no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has?
But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait patiently."
As we move closer to Spring, I watch my family shaking off the wintery weather.
It feels like years since we had seen real, radiant sunlight. The air is fresh and light and so good for Z to be out in. I'm convinced the cold weather robs us of a certain energy. Its draining.
SPRING FORWARD IS JUST A FEW DAYS FROM NOW!!
Ben was just recently commenting on crops being planted and the potential energy each seed has. Each seed is being germinated and made ready for the season ahead. That seems so applicable to our family right now. We're each in a place of waiting and preparation.
Ben, we hope, will soon be notified that he has been accepted to the Master Program in Baltimore. Z is constantly in this state, learning and preparing for the life ahead of him. Myself, well I am in school too.
As a family, we are setting goals and building dreams. We may not be at the stage where we can take many actions, but it is important to us to not neglect the place we are in.Our family goals and purposes, while flexible they must be, are what will keep us going.
In the next few months, we hope to have more to share about Ben's future Master's Program and the general welfare of our home. Hopefully we can get more pictures up soon as well.

Family Time
Our family does not watch a lot of television. For one, it's ridiculous to pay for hundreds of channels we would never watch. And two, we sincerely enjoy our time together.
Each night, we have carved out a dedicated time to DO something together.
After homework, dinner, dishes, and before Z gets ready for bed; we often play a game. Usually our game is accompanied by ice cream.
Lately, we have devolved an addiction to the card game versions of traditional board games. There are several reasons. First, between 7:00 and 8:00, is family time (usually) and we all know you cannot finish a game of real Monopoly in one hour. So we can play as few or as many "hands" of the game as we can fit in the time. Also, it allows for more winners. It has turned out that all three of us are pretty competitive. In order for it to be fun, one player cannot always be winning.

Last night, we played Scrabble SLAM for the first time.
Basically, you start with one, four letter word laid out on the table. For example, "Slam".
Then each player uses the cards in their hand to alter the word by only one letter at a time. The goal is to discard all of the letters in your hand.
So, once we begin; "Slam" turned into "Slap" and then "Slat" and then "Swat" and then back to "Slat"... in a matter of moments. It is the perfect game for a seven year old.
The words are short and he is practicing spelling.
It's certainly fun, but also challenging (even for Ben and I).
We are definitely looking forward to playing it again!

Greeting 2011
Fourteen days now invested into the 11th year of the Third Millennium; sitting here thinking about our life and how strange, wonderful, and at times intimidating it can be. I like to think about the day I decided to move to Maryland, and then the day I met Ben. He was so different then… I was so different then. It has all changed in such drastic ways; and yet only three years and a handful of months have passed since that time.
It is with this knowledge, that we are certain 2011 will bring us many more alterations. After all, we want to grow! We expect a variety of circumstances, some challenging and some wonderful, will shape the way our family operates.
Our family continues to substantiate, the way a blended family ought. It takes time and extreme amounts of understanding. By nature, a blended family exists and grows in a sort of constant transition. From one home to the next. From one week to the next. Amidst all of this, Ben's goal has remained to provide Z with as much consistency and stability as we can.
Identity issues, family values, and even gender roles are at times challenged. Our little seven year old often struggles with who he is. In public, he squirms at the mention of "Step" and has requested I either refer to him as Z or my son. He has told me, "Its not that I don't love my mom, but its kinda like I have two moms. I really like that." And at times, he defiantly tests me, "But you are not my mom…" Once and only once he called me "Evil Stepmother" jokingly. I assured him I am only evil A) in the mornings when I don't have my coffee and B) When you're doing something you really shouldn't be, in which case, I am just doing my job. We both laughed and he received an ample amount of hugs. However, I know in the back of my head that this Little boy is trying so hard to figure out how live two lives.
Despite all of this, Z continues to THRIVE in school. He recently receive an award for not only doing well on his State Standardized Tests, but receiving a 100% on his math test! We have yet to figure out where he get his math skills from, but we sure are thankful!
During conferences, his teacher's only complaint was that Z finishes his work so fast, he does not know what to do with his spare time! Again, so thankful!
All in all, we are looking forward to 2011 and what it holds for us. Hopefully warmer weather soon!

November
This is officially my first blog entry EVER. Quite a departure from sending news down the river on papyrus, as I am accustomed.
The big news is that Zack has made honor roll at Quarterfield Elementary School. He is in second grade.
I've been working steadily at the bookstore, but am getting restless. I'm considering other options as I prepare for my next steps towards becoming a teacher.

A month later...
Ok, so its been awhile. I guess that's life. I am at "work" which really isn't that much like work at all. Three days a week, I care for a sweet little baby. Corrine is 6 1/2 months old and a very loving and snuggly little thing. I'm writing this as she sleeps her last nap of the day on my chest. She is the youngest of three girls, pretty close in age.
So work is going well. School is also going well.
Ben has had his first "gig" as a substitute teacher, but we are nervous about cutting back hours. You never know if you will have work that week or not. Lucky for us, he will be shooting another wedding in about two weeks!
Z is growing like crazy it seems! Seriously, he is so big and so mature. I am really amazed watching him interact with others; hearing his vocabulary. He's doing great in school and really enjoying his time!

First Day of September

Hello everyone!
Well, it has been a month since our wedding and since then has been nonstop. We are now into the full routine of school. Z is getting to walk to school most days, which seems like a luxury to me; our bus rides to school were about an hour each way. Today we received our first email of the year from Z's teacher;
"In our short time together, he seems to be extremely apt as it pertains to academics. We are continuing to work on classroom rules and my set routine. Being purposeful about these concepts in the beginning of the year creates a classroom environment conducive for fun and learning.
He seems to be adapting socially since there are other students who are new to the school as well. I will contact you periodically throughout the year to give updates on his progress and behavior. Fell free to contact me at your convenience should you need additional information or clarity!"
Knowing that our little guy has been going through so many stressful changes made me nervous about the school year, however, I was very comforted by Mrs. Jones' words. Consequently, her family is from Georgia and just relocated to Maryland. So the new students and new teacher are learning to adapt to the school together.
New in our world, not only did Z begin school last week, but I also started classes at the community college. So far, I am excited and confident. For those of you who don't know, my Mom is also going back to school. Last semester, she happily maintained a 4.0gpa; I feel there may be some competition in the future. ;oP At least I will strive to achieve the standard she is setting. (I'm very proud of you Mom!!)
Z is craving pumpkin pie, and I promised we would make caramel apples. In fact, we went apple picking with Emily last weekend in Western Maryland... so I have 10lbs of apples I have to do something with!
For now, I think I need to be studying!

School has begun!
This school year, I have resolved to be the most organized. I've even made our schedule and posted it to the fridge. I know what you're thinking, and yes, I was worried that having a schedule would result in us never having fun time... but I was wrong! Day two of our scheduled life, and everyone was on time! We even walked him to school today!
Ben wakes up earlier than Z and I do. He showers, dresses, and enjoys his morning coffee.
Z and I wake up around 7:00am.(this is a feat.. I would easily sleep until 10!) Z dresses immediately, while I make PANCAKES (yes, on the first school day!) for breakfast and we have time to sit and enjoy breakfast together.
Fast forward. Everyone is dressed and ready to leave on time. We both got to take Z to his first day of school. He was pretty excited... and man, did he look cute in his uniform!

After school, we went to meet with Randy, Z's counselor. Came home, had dinner and even had an hour to go on a walk after dinner before Z's shower and "bed time routine" (which now includes Z reading to himself most days... last night, he read for almost 40 minutes!)
Everything was done by 8:30, giving Ben and I time to catch up and talk about our day.
Like I said, this morning we even had time to walk Z to school! Let's hope once activities begin, we can keep it up!

Our Week!
School is starting on Monday! This week has flown by! Here is an overview of our week:
Monday morning Z was dropped off at our house to begin our week with him. He and I played, read, and watched a movie together while Ben was at work. After work, we took Z to the Aquatic Center for an hour or so.

Also this week, Z and I ran to the post office while Dad was at work. There had been one of those lovely pink "you have mail that wont fit in your box" notes lying on the table for a few days, and since it was for a certain "Z. Weybright" I felt it would be fun if he went to get the package. The lines were long and he was squirmy, but the second that package got in his hands, he was completely happy.
We opened it in the car to avoid 7 year old death caused by suspense. The receipt was from Grandpa Loren and when Z saw a tin of Pokemon cards he began almost breathlessly,
"WOW! Pokemon cards! Awesome! Grandpa is the best! Look, Leah, Arceus! He is the strongest ever! Grandpa is the greatest, isnt he?"
I of course agree. Evoking that much enthusiasm from a little guy really is what makes grandparents special. Thanks Grandpa Loren, for making Z's day very special.
Thursday morning, Z and I met his mother at QF Elementary for New Student orientation. For the first half, the School Counselor addressed the parents and discussed policy... during that time Z rolled his eyes plenty. Boredom is the worst possible form of torture. The second half of orientation, we were divided into groups and partnered with one of last year's QF 5th Graders. It seemed to be an honor for these 10 year olds, leading adults and children around, talking about the media room and introducing them to teachers.
Z's favorite part, I think, was his tall, skinny red locker. The concept of a locker is both exciting and new to him. He also noted that Mrs. Jones, his new teacher, seems very nice.
Monday morning will bring us to the end of summer and we will be forced back into routine... which I cannot say I am sad about. Just like Z finds comfort in consistency and stability, I think our family benefits from having a schedule too.

Our Family Blogs!

With school beginning in less than one week, we thought it would be a great opportunity to begin blogging for our family.
Our life is going through several major changes right now. Zack will be going to school in our district and living with us during the weeks. He will spend most weekends with his mom, but the last weekend of each month will be his weekend with us.
We're excited about these changes, and yet we are a little sad to say so-long to the summer!
